New observation tower at the summit of Mont Saint-Magloire (917 m) at Parc du Massif du Sud
Saint-Philémon, November 10, 2025 – Parc du Massif du Sud is proud to announce the opening of its brand-new observation tower, built at the summit of Mont Saint-Magloire (917 m), the highest point in the Chaudière-Appalaches region. This iconic new addition enhances the outdoor experience at the heart of one of the most majestic landscapes in the area.
Rising nearly 63 feet (19 meters) high, the observation tower offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the majestic Appalachian landscapes. On clear days, visitors can admire the Laurentians to the north and Mount Katahdin, the magnificent peak in Maine, to the south. In winter, the panorama transforms into a magical spectacle as the summit’s fir trees are dusted with snow and frost, bringing to life the famous “ghost” scenery.
To ensure maximum comfort for visitors, a shelter has also been built near the tower, perfect for a cozy break.
“The new Mont Saint-Magloire tower is much more than a simple lookout: it is an immersive experience that allows visitors to fully appreciate the natural richness of the area. It reflects our commitment to offering sustainable, accessible, and memorable experiences,” emphasizes Jean François Préfontaine, Director General of Parc du Massif du Sud.
This project, carried out by Construction JL Groleau, received a grant of $603,200 from the Fonds régions et ruralité (FRR) through the MRCs of Bellechasse and Les Etchemins, for a total investment of $785,000. Designed to highlight the region’s natural and scenic heritage, the project represents a major milestone in the development of the park, which continues to expand its offerings for hiking and outdoor adventure enthusiasts.
Access to the tower is primarily via the Parcours du Mont Saint-Magloire, a 13.9 km hiking trail (elevation gain of 641 m, approximately 5 hours 30 minutes). During the winter season, the site is also accessible by snowmobile through the network of federated trails, allowing visitors to enjoy the unique panorama even in the heart of winter.
Visitors are invited to plan their outing now and secure their access rights on the official website: massifdusud.com.
